The Town of Greenwich Tree Warden has scheduled a public hearing concerning the removal of 34 trees at Cardinal Stadium at 10 Hillside Road. The virtual Zoom hearing is set for Wednesday, May 12 at 1:00pm.
BOE member Joe Kelly who is on the stadium committee said the trees need to be removed to make way for handicapped parking.
“We are interested in swapping trees but we support the handicapped parking for the stadium that’s required. We’re very sensitive about the trees,” Kelly said, referring to planting new trees to replace the 34 that will be removed.
“We wanted to start the handicapped parking already, but didn’t realize the trees weren’t part of the process,” he added. “(The tree warden) held things up. We thought the P&Z approval included the trees.”

Back in June of 2014, neighbors said they were surprised at the tree cutting on the GHS campus and that the trees hadn’t been posted by the tree warden. The trees were in areas near Putnam Ave where contaminated soil was to be removed, having been identified by the town’s environmental consultants. Also, trees were removed create a staging area for contractor access from Route 1 to campus.
