Zoom Webinar Set for July 25: Play It Safe, Grass vs. Artificial Turf Playing Fields

On Thursday, July 25 from 7:00 - 8:30pm there will be a Zoom presentation on artificial turf vs natural grass playing fields, entitled, "Play It Safe." The webinar is the result of a partnership between the Greenwich Sustainability Committee  and the Interreligious Eco-Justice Network (IREJN). The webinar will be moderated by Terri Eickel, Executive Director of IREJN.
Deciding whether to install an artificial turf or natural grass playing field requires serious consideration. The assessment should include a detailed analysis of maintenance, safety and environmental impact. Responsible questions must be asked and answered based on current and accurate data. The webinar will feature both the basics and recent findings about artificial turf and grass fields as well as recommendations and guidelines for establishing and maintaining durable grass playing fields. During the Zoom event, Susan Rudolph, a member of the Greenwich Sustainability Committee and subject expert, will present an overview of artificial turf versus natural grass playing fields. Ms Rudolph utilizes her background of over 25 years in marketing research and consulting in the public policy arena to add clarity to this topic. Sh received her MBA from the New York University Stern School of Business and holds a M.A. from Columbia University and a B.A. from Barnard College. Dr. Trey Rogers, from the Dept of Plant, Soil and Microbial  Sciences at Michigan State University will discuss how to create and maintain natural grass fields.
The webinar will feature both the basics and recent findings about artificial turf and grass fields, as well as recommendations and guidelines for establishing and maintaining durable grass playing fields. Dr. Rogers current research includes performance turf renovations, turf grass establishment and soil modification. He is a key grass consultant for the 16 venues in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Soccer Tournament. He was also part of the planning, designing and building of the new grass track at Churchill Downs. Before that, Dr. Rogers was a consultant and project leader for the 2008 and 2004 Summer Olympic Games. Click here to register on Eventbrite for the Zoom webinar.
