Roy Merritt Brown, 82, beloved husband, father, and respected business owner, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2024, surrounded by his wife and four daughters. Born on March 28, 1942, in Montclair, New Jersey, Roy was the eldest of three children. His early years were marked by a sense of adventure and a strong work ethic, qualities that would define his life. Roy graduated from Iona College in 1964, as a history major and a member of the crew team. After college, he was accepted to officer candidate school and went on to serve in the US Navy for four years as a Lieutenant and navigator of the USS Shadwell. Following his service in the Navy, Roy married his teenage sweetheart and love of his life, Marilynne Jean Staffeld, and settled in Greenwich, Connecticut. He joined the family business, Pac-Kit Safety Equipment Company, eventually becoming President and CEO, where he continued to grow the company and lead the industry with quality medical supplies. In 2011, Roy retired and sold the business, later selling the historic building known as ‘The Factory’, located in South Norwalk. It is now home to Space Cat Brewery and East Coast Kombucha. Roy was an avid reader and an automotive enthusiast with a love for both classic and modern cars; reading often to stay up to date with the latest automotive trends and watching Formula One races as a favorite pastime. A devoted husband to his wife and four daughters, Roy was gentle in nature and instilled in those around him the values of hard work, perseverance, and compassion that guided his own life. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family during holidays and vacations, especially in Vermont on Lake St. Catherine. Roy is survived by his wife, Marilynne, his sister, Jane Maxwell, daughters Merritt Merritt (John), PJ Connolly (Tom), Heather Brown, and Sarah Sepot (Brian), as well as his grandchildren who knew him affectionately as “Poppy”; Camden, Spencer, Kenleigh, Tucker, Preston, Rylan, Hunter, Chase, Jack, and Greyson Roy. He was preceded in death by his parents Cecil Vernoy Brown and Ethel Partington Brown, as well as his brother James Brinton Brown. A private family Celebration of Life will be held. Roy strived to always educate himself and stressed the importance of education to his children and grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to Greenwich Scholarship Association. Please direct donations to the specific established award, ‘Marie’s Scholars’, in memory of Roy M. Brown.
