Fed up with Robo-Calls? Here’s How to Block Them.

$

According to the CT BBB, more consumers file complaints with the FTC about robocalls than any other single issue. In the first five months of 2017, the FTC says it received 1.9 million complaints.

Consumers can help reduce the number of unwanted, annoying and illegal scam telephone calls, as part of a new Federal Trade Commission (FTC) program.

The FTC initiative involves providing telecommunications companies and other industry partners with known robocallers’ telephone numbers every day, to bolster efforts to reduce and prevent the computer-dialed calls.
According to the CT Better Business Bureau, The FTC collects scammers’ telephone numbers from consumer complaints to the Do Not Call Registry, either online or by telephone. The more consumers report the numbers, the faster it can develop its blacklist database.
“There are few issues that anger consumers as much as these unwanted calls,” said CT BBB spokesman Howard Schwartz. “Robocalls are at the heart of a huge percentage of attempts to deceive consumers into disclosing personal and financial information.”
At the moment, blacklisting robocall telephone numbers is the most effective method of blocking them, as researchers continue their work on new technology to stop them.
Connecticut BBB offers some tips to help you reduce the frequency of unwanted calls:
Get onto the Do Not Call Registry – You can help populate the FTC robocall initiative database by calling 888-382-1222, or registering online at donotcall.gov. You will receive fewer marketing calls and make it easier to identify the fraudulent ones.
Don’t press any digits on your keypad – Ignore recorded prompts to press digits on your telephone keypad to be taken off their calling list. If you press any keys, it tells the scammers you have an active number, that you are amenable to picking up calls from unknown numbers and willing to following a call to action.
Your number will then be sold to other telemarketers and the frequency of calls will increase.
Beware of corporate ID fraud – Callers may use the name of a legitimate company to lend credibility to their pitches. Hang up, and if it differs from the number of the legitimate company, report the number to the Do Not Call Registry.
Watch out for “bait and switch” – Some callers will ask something such as “Is Jane there?” When you tell them they have the wrong number, they change the subject and may ask a question such as “While you’re on the phone, have you thought about installing new carpets in your home?”
Don’t pick up the phone – If you don’t know the incoming number, let it ring. If the call goes to voicemail you may be able to discern what sort of a call it is.
Law enforcement, technical experts, regulators and industry have been working diligently to stop the illegal marketing calls, and have had success in tracking down and closing robocall and live marketing call operations. In the meantime, you can help stop the calls by simply reporting them to the Do Not Call Registry.

With the season opener weeks away, Cardinal Stadium was awash with red and white on Sunday Aug 20.

It was a glorious morning for the Greenwich High School football team and cheerleading squad to gather for photos.

The football players, under the direction of coach John Marinelli, gathered for individual, group and team photos, while the cheerleaders, under the direction of coach Erin Montague, were photographed in various formations and doing stunts, which this year include Giant letters that spell out “CARDINALS.”

Check out the Greenwich High School football team website, and put their first game on your calendar: Sept 9 at Sacred Heart University vs Trumbull!

HOUSE OF THE WEEK: Four New Townhomes in Downtown Greenwich To Be Sold at Bankruptcy Auction

The Maples on Milbank, 151 Milbank Avenue, Greenwich, CT.

Four upscale townhomes in The Maples at Milbank, a luxury residential address in the fashionable downtown of Greenwich, Connecticut, will be sold during a one-day bankruptcy auction conducted by Madison Hawk Partners on September 19th, 2017.

The special auction event will provide discerning homebuyers the opportunity to own a well-appointed, newly-built townhome located just two blocks from bustling Greenwich Avenue and minutes from Metro North train service and a highway network into Manhattan.

Opening bids of $1,999,000 will provide a nearly 40% discount off the original asking prices of $3.25 million, according to Jeff Hubbard, President of Madison Hawk Partners, a national real estate firm and industry leader specializing in Structured Accelerated Sales. All of the units will be presented for sale at this auction.

“This is a rare one-day opportunity to acquire a remarkable, estate-inspired residence in downtown Greenwich at a significantly discounted price,” noted Mr. Hubbard.

“These are high-quality homes. The auction does not represent a situation where a builder didn’t have the funds to complete the work to the highest standards,” Hubbard continued. “The bankruptcy sale is simply a result of timing issues related to the financing.”

Potential bidders are invited to tour the property and homes and see for themselves the attention-to-detail and high level of construction and craftsmanship.

Buyers will also have the ability to be provided with a one-year warranty, with $100,000 escrowed to cover any potential issues on their townhome for added security and peace of mind.

Homes offered at the auction may be viewed during Open Houses on August 20th and September 9th, 10th, 16th and 17th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Additional evening Open Houses are scheduled on September 12th and 18th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

The auction event will be held at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich, located at 1800 East Putnam Avenue, Old Greenwich, CT 06870. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. with the auction commencing at 6:30 p.m.

The Maples at Milbank is a community that reflects the warmth and charm of a quaint New England village with exterior highlights including cedar shingles, distinctive porticos and copper accents.

The four-story townhomes offer estate-inspired layouts with a study and/or breakfast nook on the main level, three spacious bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms on the second level, a bonus room on the third level and finished basements. Sumptuous interiors boast a Chef’s Kitchen with Wolf and Subzero appliances, white custom cabinets and marble countertops.

Located at 151 Milbank Avenue, The Maples at Milbank is a quick walk from the landmark restaurants, chic boutiques and shopping, and entertainment and culture of downtown Greenwich. The luxury community is also minutes from the Metro North train station which provides direct service into Manhattan’s Grand Central Station in less than an hour. Nearby I-95 brings the business centers of Norwalk and Stamford just a quick commute away.

Chuck Bologna, 70

Chuck Bologna

A lifelong resident of Greenwich, Charles Nicholas Bologna, Jr., died peacefully at his home on August 24 surrounded by his family.

Born on February 11, 1947, in Greenwich, Chuck was the son of the late Charles and Carmen (Nellie) Elizabeth Bologna. Chuck grew up in Chickahominy, attending St. Roch Church and graduating from Greenwich High School. Later, he attended Pace University and Norwalk Community College. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, leaving for the service less than two months after marrying his wife, Christine Bologna.

Chuck was a talented woodworker who worked as a general contractor throughout his life. He valued hard work and was known as someone you could call to fix anything. He loved working on projects for friends and family, and in particular, for his children. He devoted his retirement to helping his children settle into their adult lives. From renovating houses to preparing boats for the summer to tinkering with cars, he was always available when his family needed him. He was also overjoyed by the births of his grandsons in 2015. He loved being a “pop” and was adored by the boys.

He was passionate about cars, motorcycles and boats. From motorcycle trips across the desert to boating across Long Island Sound, Chuck thrived on the freedom that came from the open road and water. The saltiness of the sound and the roll of the waves will forever remind us of Chuck’s connection to the water. His boat, Finnegan’s Wake, was his pride and joy and his escape from everyday life.

Chuck loved food and the happiness that it brought to people. For more than 30 years, he made cheesecakes during the holidays, and he delivered them to his closest friends and family. His recipe was a well-kept secret, and his list of deliveries seemed to grow each year.

He is survived by his loving family: his wife of 48 years, Christine Bologna, son Michael Bologna (Jessica Hindlian), daughters Lisa Beauchamp (Christopher Beauchamp) and Amy Kerekes (Norbert Kerekes) and grandsons Calvin Beau-champ and Nicolas Kerekes, and his sisters, Pamela Clark (Bob Clark) and Donna Rundel (Hermann Rundel).

A wake will held at Castiglione Funeral Home, 544 Old Post Road #3 in Greenwich from 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Wednesday, August 30 and a celebration of life will be held on Sunday, September 17 from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm at the Greenwich Boat & Yacht Club, 9 Grass Island Road.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Chuck’s memory to the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich or the Bendheim Cancer Center in Greenwich. To leave an online condolence please visit www.castiglionefh.com.

DEEP Okays Greenwich’s Harbor Management Plan; MacMillan: My priorities remain the same

$

In a letter to Greenwich’s harbor management commission dated August 21 from CT Dept of Energy and Environmental Protection, Brian Thompson, director of the Land and Water Resources division sent word that Greenwich’s harbor management plan has been approved by the state.

“We have reviewed the entire Plan and have found that all substantive comments provided by the reviewing agencies have been adequately addressed,” Thompson wrote. “We hereby approve this Plan pursuant to the provision of the Connecticut Harbor Management Act (CHMA), Connecticut General Statutes (CBS) §22a-113m.”

The Plan won’t go into effect until the Town of Greenwich officially adopts it. Though the Board of Selectmen voted to approve it on July 13, the plan must go before the RTM.

Mr. Thompson recommended in his letter that Greenwich have its legal department review the Plan as well, saying, “Because the commission will function as a municipal agency pursuant to the state statutes, you may wish to have the Plan reviewed by the Town attorney to ensure that the entire scope of authorities set forth in the plan is enforceable.”

The Harbor Management Commission leadership and the Board of Selectmen have had a contentious relationship with Greenwich Harbor Master Ian MacMillan, who is appointed by the Governor.

On Aug 2, MacMillan, whose last three-year term had expired on June 30, received word from the Governor he had been reappointed. Between the expiration of his term and his reappointment, the harbor management commission used Monster.com to advertise the position, which is unpaid but for a $525 stipend.

“Any instructions that I receive from the harbor commission will have to be approved by David Blatt at the DEEP,” MacMillan said on Saturday. “Other than that, I’ll continue to meet my duties under CT state law and federal law, including offer serene and harmonious harbors to all mariners, to station all vessels seaward of the high water mark in Greenwich and offer safe harbors to all who require them.”

MacMillan said neither the absence of a harbor management plan, nor its adoption would impact his day-to-day routine. “I’ve been doing what would be required by a harbor management plan all along,” he said on Saturday.

“My priorities are to dredge Greenwich Harbor and restore it to its federal specification,” MacMillan back in August. “I am also very interested in finishing up my work on mooring fields and I’m hoping that I’ll get support for that from the Harbor Management commission.” MacMillan said he also intends to remove hazards to navigation and monitor buoys more carefully.

Toner: Among BET Candidates, Tarkington Stands Out

$

Letter to the editor submitted by Selectman John Toner, Aug 25, 2017

Town of Greenwich registered Republicans have a unique election occurring on September 12, a primary for the slate for the Republican ticket for the Board of Estimate and Taxation (BET).  Such a primary has not occurred in years, offering voters a choice for this very powerful finance board.

Standing for election are seven highly educated, highly experienced and highly qualified individuals who are seeking six positions on the BET.  However, one candidate stands out:  Leslie Tarkington.

Leslie has served for almost 12 years on the BET.  She has held Board positions as Chairman of the Law Committee, Chairman of the Human Resources Committee, and  has been  a member of the Budget and Audit Committees.  She acted as  liaison to the Assessor’s Office and the Greenwich High School Performing Arts Center Building Committee.

She has also served on the Board of Directors of the Nathaniel Witherell and its Building Committee.

I urge my fellow Republicans to participate in this primary and to return Leslie to the Board of Estimation and Taxation.  She has worked tirelessly and relentlessly these past 12 years for the citizens of the Town of Greenwich to keep taxes reasonable, projects on schedule, lawsuits within reason, and real estate valuations fair and equitable.

Please vote on September 12th.

Sincerely,
John F. Toner

Editor’s Note: This election season, Greenwich Free Press, announces a change in policy on letters to the editor. We will no longer be able to publish every letter to the editor recommending a candidate that we receive. Based on the volume of letters received during previous elections, it is simply not possible.

The deadline to submit a letter to the editor for the Nov 7, 2017 election is October 30, 2017.
